The Fire in the Sea

The Fire in the Sea

The dove descending breaks the air
With flame of incandescent terror
Of which the tongues declare
The one discharge from sin and error.
The only hope, or else despair
Lies in the choice of pyre or pyre-
To be redeemed from fire by fire.

Who then devised the torment? Love.
Love is the unfamiliar Name
Behind the hands that wove
The intolerable shirt of flame
Which human power cannot remove.
We only live, only suspire
Consumed by either fire or fire.
T.S. Eliot

Your Faith, Your Trust

Your Faith, Your Trust

"But we were never lonely and never afraid when we were together. I know that the night is not the same as the day: that all things are different, that the things of the night cannot be explained in the day, because they do not then exist..." (Hemingway)

Raise It Up

Raise It Up

Some years ago a Western lowland gorilla named Harambe was killed to protect a child who'd fallen into the animal's enclosure. The child's mother had taken her children to the zoo for a family outing.
Some thought the gorilla had tried to protect the fallen child. Those who shot the gorilla also were trying to protect the child. No malice was intended when these imperfect human decisions were made, but unfortunately, they led to tragedy on this day. I was saddened to see so much vitriol in the public's response toward the child's mother and towards the zoo staff, as if their actions stemmed from some lack of morality or character when it seemed as though most everyone involved intended to do the right thing, including Harambe. This piece was made in recognition of the innocence of those involved.

Don’t Be

Don’t Be

"Never love a wild thing, Mr. Bell,' Holly advised him. 'That was Doc's mistake. He was always lugging home wild things. A hawk with a hurt wing. One time it was a full-grown bobcat with a broken leg. But you can't give your heart to a wild thing: the more you do, the stronger they get. Until they're strong enough to run into the woods. Or fly into a tree. Then a taller tree. Then the sky. That's how you'll end up, Mr. Bell. If you let yourself love a wild thing. You'll end up looking at the sky." Truman Capote...

Side Show

Side Show

During one of the cash-strapped years of young adulthood I helped a friend out on her midnight paper route. It was bitter cold and dark, and we rode through the streets in her boyfriend's old VW van, the sliding door wide open so we could sling rolled newspapers onto driveways without coming to a stop. The car heater was broken. We filled an old pasta pot with rubbing alcohol and set it on fire, then wedged it between the seats where the newspapers were stacked. In our hurry to be done we planted our legs wide on the floor of the careening VW and flung papers out of the van as it screeched around street corners and through neighborhoods. I wondered about others who might be trying to make money at that hour of the night and saw us as a side show to the "carnival" that ran from 9 to 5.
