The patterns and color variations on a stone found along the banks of the Rio Grande reminded me of different cell and tissueillustrations I’d seen when studying science in college, and as often happens when I’m outdoors, the distinctions faded among past and present, organic and inorganic, desert and sea, hence a fish from the desert. The protectivefigures surrounding the fish defeat the superstition, ideology and propaganda that we often use to define reality.
